Atlantic City, New Jersey has been re-creating itself by spending hundreds of millions of dollars in new development to beautify the city, add additional services and attractions, and make Atlantic City your vacation destination.

Moments in Atlantic City History:

  • 1670s – Thomas Budd, an English settler, purchases Absecon Island upon which Atlantic City was built
  • 1785 – The first permanent structure on the island is built by Jeremiah Leeds
  • 1852 – Construction on the rail line connecting the island to the mainland begins
  • 1854 - Trains begin arriving from Camden
  • 1870 – The first official road, from Pleasantville, is complete.
  • 1880 - Atlantic City officially opens its doors
  • 1921 – Atlantic City hosts the Miss American Pageant
  • 1976 – Gambling is approved in Atlantic City
  • 1978 – Resorts Atlantic City opens as the city’s, and East Coast’s, first legal casino.

Interesting facts about Atlantic City:

  • Atlantic City’s street names are used on the Monopoly board game.
  • Salt water taffy was discovered in Atlantic City. According to legend, a huge storm in 1883 caused the tide to rise so high that it flooded a candy store. The store’s owner, David Bradley, was the first to coin the phrase Salt Water Taffy.
  • The famous Atlantic City Boardwalk was originally built to keep the sand off of women’s shoes.
  • Lucy, the world’s largest man-made elephant, resides at nearby Margate Beach. Built in 1881 she stands 65 feet high and weighs 90 tons! Lucy was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places.
